The Sputnik Forest
It is a project that was born thanks to the support of Retree And you are invited to be a part of it and actively participate in raising environmental awareness, creating a positive impact, and generating lots of oxygen! We want to restore a degraded area of more than 100 hectares that needs 130.000 trees, native species, and careful attention to ensure its survival!
Our forest –ours, yours, nobody's!– is located in Robledillo de la Jara, in the Sierra Norte of Madrid, almost bordering Guadalajara, and, until the 30s, it was an extraordinary oak forest, destroyed by historical circumstances, need and fires.
With time (and work) the forest will become a powerful CO2 sink capable of absorbing 0,15 tons of carbon dioxide per tree, in addition to the water benefit and the positive socio-economic impact (local hiring of staff who work in the forest).
Would you like to be part of this forest?
Of course! The most important thing is that there are many of us. So tell everyone. It's about planting trees (you can do it from this page). In the coming months, we'll be organizing forest-related campaigns (events, volunteering, etc.) and we'd love for you to join us.
The positive impact of planting a tree can be measured, and as you can see right here, in real time. An oak tree, for example, can live up to 200 years and neutralize 130 kg of CO2 during its first 40 years. These figures are influenced by many factors: the time of year, heat, humidity, rainfall, and the amount of sunlight it receives. A tree not only neutralizes CO2, but also generates water benefits: thanks to soil regeneration, water is not lost to runoff and accumulates in aquifers. Another benefit is socioeconomic: each tree needs to be planted and maintained, which creates local jobs.
We're just one of you. We've only just begun this journey by planting 250 trees, and we'll plant more. You can plant one tree, half a tree, or a thousand. Don't worry, there's enough land for everyone and plenty of work ahead!
Oaks, holm oaks, junipers, turpentine trees, Pyrenean oaks, maritime pine, or Scots pine. The chosen species (always native) and their combination are based on a study to guarantee their survival and resistance to pests, drought, and fires.
We have chosen, to begin with, the Valley of Dreams, in a village in the Sierra Norte of Madrid, very close to the province of Guadalajara. It is called Robledillo de la Jara and lost its native oak forest in the late 30s; the war and famine justified its deforestation for rye cultivation. Later, fires accelerated the destruction of flora and fauna. We will soon expand the areas to create what is known as a “decentralized forest.”
Very easy: press the button “I want to plant a tree!"Or click on this link and follow the process."
Thanks to Retree's technological development, we can track the impact of the forest in real time: the trees planted to date, the CO2 they are neutralizing at any given moment, the water benefit, and the local work hours generated.
