In this two-day practical course we will learn to understand topographic maps and use them correctly along with the compass in a real mountain terrain.

*It is recommended to register one week in advance to take advantage of the 2 hours prior to the start of the distance learning course.

Anyone who wants to learn how to navigate using a map and compass in nature.

The client may withdraw from the requested or contracted services, having the right to a refund of the amounts paid in the following cases:

  • Giving notice at least 7 days before the start of the course.
  • If the course is suspended or moved to another date due to bad weather, not having a minimum number of participants or force majeure reasons.
  • For medical reasons that prevent the student from taking the course (proof will be required).

If none of the reasons described above apply, failure to attend the course will result in losing the total amount paid for the reservation.

Content

  • Equipment and materials. Types of maps, compasses, and altimeters.
  • Interpretation and reading of topographic maps.
  • Map and compass orientation techniques.
  • Taking directions and how to follow them.
  • Advanced orientation. Triangulation, coordinate measurement.
  • Orientation in poor visibility.
  • Route planning.

Objectives

  • Knowing how to read and interpret topographic maps at various scales.
  • Learn to use the compass and altimeter along with the map, to apply advanced orientation techniques.
  • Knowing where we are on the map at all times.
  • Learn to differentiate elements of the relief such as spurs, valleys, sinkholes, elevations, etc.
  • Learn to plan a route from home with the help of specific maps.

Session 1. Theory in the classroom - practice in the mountains
